Steamed rice in shapes of moons and stars

Ingredients
 
1 1/3 cup jasmine rice
 
hot water
 
2 moon molds, 2 star molds
 


Preparation steps:
  1. Boil 3 cups water in a double deck steamer pot. Additionally boil water in the teakettle.
  2. Pour 1/3 cup rice into each mold. Rinse the rice with tap water.
  3. Once the water in the steamer boils, pour 1/3 cup hot water into each mold.
  4. Arrange 2 molds in each steamer deck and steam for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from steamer and cool down. Use a cake spatula to release the rice from the mold. Flip the molds onto a serving dish. (see picture)
Serving: Garnish with dry cilantro.

Background:
The moon and start molds are cup size cake
molds. Since these were not made for steaming
but baking, it is important to wash and dry
them right after the steaming, otherwise the
molds would get rusty.
Additionally, use a plastic cake spatula rather
than a knife to release the rice from the mold,
so that the molds don't get scratched and rusty.


Take note!
  • Pour a little bit less than 1/3 cup of hot
    water into the molds of the lower steamer
    deck, as they get more moist being closer
    to the sreamer water.
    This would promote same level of moisture
    for all rice molds.


Alternatives:
  • Long grain white rice can be used instead
    of the jasmine rice.
